Cormo Sheep & Wool Farm

Young Cormo Lamb White Fleeces These fleeces are all the softest and finest. Technically they are 2008 fleeces but they were just shorn in December. It is so hard to lose all of these wonderfully soft fleeces when we sell the lambs. This year we set aside a few of the best. Don't expect Tim's professional shearing job because Toni (she held the shears) and I sheared them ourselves. There may be some second cuts and unevenness of staple length. Sheep are curvy and lambs tend to be wiggly. Probably you won't be able to lay out the entire fleece and find the head, tail and each side but we did get better towards the end of the project. The fleeces are skirted but I wanted to keep them intact as much as possible so I was gentle with the shaking. I also left some of the shorter locks in because people may want to use them for blending with other fibers or for felting. These fleeces were not covered. The lambs were not fed hay but lambs do like to play and jump on each other and of course will be laying down in the grass and weeds. I was encouraged to sell the shorter fleeces after reading that a hat manufacturer prefers to buy Texas Rambouillet fleece that is actually shorn twice a year.

These fleeces do not have the cleanliness and uniformity of the regular professionally sheared wool clip but they are price accordingly. If you are not satisfied after purchasing one of these fleeces you may return it for a refund of the fiber cost but I will not pay for any shipping. I randomly picked two of these fleeces and took them to my local guild meeting for some unbiased opinions from other spinners. One spinner took one for a Christmas present for herself and another wanted the other one but I said that the property taxes had to be paid first.

All of these fleeces are very soft and fine. We tried to make a few comments to help you decide between fleeces. We took photos of the entire fleeces rather than just a lock scan to help you better evaluate the fleeces. You can click on the photo to view a larger image.

Update-  A drum carded batt from one of these fleeces was brought to our guild meeting. Jaci had just gotten the fleece for Christmas. She has Jacobs sheep, has spun Cormo roving but never started from a fleece. She is really happy with it but I'll try to remember everything she said. First, she gave her compliments to Toni and said that her shearing job had much fewer second cuts than her fleeces that were shorn by a 'professional". She didn't find the VM to be excessive. No problems washing it but was surprised at how much dirt came out in the water. She used mesh bags. Compared to Jacob she was surprised at how fluffy it is at all stages. She didn't like out it came out with her fine tooth drum carder but is really happy with what she got with hand cards. She feels that hand cards are actually faster and she can easily get out any VM or second cuts that are still there. The batt didn't have any neps in it but it wasn't very  smooth or even looking. There were a few pieces that were still in lock formation and showed the crimp. That batt was the SOFTEST WOOL that I have ever felt! It was almost like touching air. I didn't see what she got off her hand cards. I told her that I didn't think that I would have trouble spinning from her batt and she agreed but still prefers her hand cards. I hope that there will be more feedback from those who purchase these fleeces.
