About Cormo Wool Yarns

These yarns were made from the wool of my registered Cormo sheep.  Great care is taken to produce clean wool.  The sheep wear coats all year to keep the dirt and vegetable mater out of their fleeces. Once a year the sheep are carefully shorn and the fleeces are well skirted (any dirty parts removed). Each fleece is checked for soundness or strength. The fleeces are sent to small "cottage mills" where they are processed with much individual care and attention. The fleeces are washed, and the wool is then picked, carded, plied and put up in skeins.  No harsh chemicals are used in processing.  Special care must be taken with fine wools so the fibers are not broken during processing.  Cormo wool fibers are 17- 23 microns diameter (soft and fine) and will be 3.25 - 4+ inches long.  The Cormo wool has a lot of crimp which makes an elastic and lofty yarn.

The yarn has not been washed after spinning.  The carding and spinning process stretches out the natural crimp in the wool fibers.  When the yarn is soaked in water the wool fibers will return to their original state and the yarn will gain a great deal of loft and elasticity. It is recommended that these yarns be washed before using so you gauge will be accurate.
